The United Nations (UN) is a diplomatic and political international organization whose declared aims are to promote international peace and security, develop cordial relations among nations, accomplish international cooperation, and serve as a centre for harmonizing the acts of nations. It is the world’s largest multinational organization. In addition to its headquarters in New York City (in the United States, but with some extraterritorial rights), the United Nations also maintains offices in Geneva, Nairobi, Vienna, and The Hague, where the Peace Palace serves as the home of the International Court of Justice.
Following World War II, the UN replaced the League of Nations, which was deemed ineffectual, with the goal of averting future global conflicts. 50 countries gathered on April 25, 1945, in San
Francisco, California for a meeting and began writing the United Nations Charter, which was approved on June 25, 1945. When the UN started operations on October 24, 1945, the charter went into effect. According to its charter, the UN’s goals are to enforce international law, promote sustainable development, deliver humanitarian aid, protect human rights, and ensure world peace and security. The United Nations now has 193 member nations, or nearly all of the world’s sovereign states, compared to its founding’s 51.
