Position:                     Chief Financial Officer

Position Description 

 

The Chief Financial Officer reports to the President/Chief Executive Officer, Michael Nyenhuis, and is responsible for strategically managing and safeguarding the assets of the organization and for ensuring that all financial functions meet the needs of the organization and its constituents. The Chief Financial Officer will lead and enhance the organization’s finance operations and manage ongoing financial accounting and budgeting processes in support of the strategies and goals of UNICEF USA, including accountability for the design, implementation, and administration of Finance functions, financial operations, treasury services, accounting, investments, external reporting, and purchasing. They will demonstrate a broad command of financial best practices and serve as a visionary leader who will bring continual improvements to the organization’s financial policies, practices, and overall operations.

 

The Chief Financial Officer will be part of the Leadership Team (LT) and will need to work closely with the other members of the team. The Chief Financial Officer will also provide information to the Board of Directors and work closely with the Finance and Audit Committees.

 

The Chief Financial Officer will drive the evolution of UUSA’s Finance department, ensuring that that it partners effectively throughout the organization, delivering excellent, proactive, customer-oriented services. They will develop innovative and strategic programs for the organization, continuously evaluate and streamline business processes, and apply technology to unlock capacity within the Finance team and within the broader organization. They will also manage and coach the Finance team to develop best-in-class services.

 

 

Key Responsibilities/Outcomes (include but are not limited to):

 

• Develop and manage core Finance processes and practices in a responsive, proactive, and impactful manner.

• Provide Finance support to UUSA’s strategic initiatives and organizational needs.

• Partner with key leaders and stakeholders to create financial management practices aligned with the broader organizational strategy.

• Partner with the Controller to develop a structured monthly close inclusive of a comprehensive financial reporting package to provide timely and robust data to assist the organization in making business decisions.

• Partner with Business Unit Leaders and Managing Director, Financial Planning and Analysis to develop spending plans that align with overall organizational strategy.

• Partner with Philanthropy Department leadership on accounting treatment for complex gifts, and to develop best practices for fundraising accounting across the organization.

• Hire, lead, mentor, evaluate and develop the Finance team.

• Advise the Leadership Team on Finance-related issues and initiatives.

• Create executive-level Financial reporting tools and reports.

• Enable department-level decision-making through financial reporting/dashboards.

• Partner with the Managing Director, Financial Planning and Analysis, and Controller to prepare the annual budget, prepare and report financial analyses (ongoing as well as ad hoc), in both quantitative and narrative form, as well as develop financial forecasts to benchmark financial health and facilitate short and long-term planning.

• With the Professional Development and Learning team, oversee the creation and implementation of a financial learning curriculum to enable the Finance team and Business Leaders to build financial literacy and skills.

• Continually assess the company’s financial strategies to ensure they remain compliant with regulatory, operational, and legal changes.

• Manage the interaction with external auditors and oversee the production of financial statements/tax documents.

• Prepare reporting for external stakeholders, including UNICEF Global.

• Manage UUSA’s investment portfolio with an external Investment Management firm.

• Identify, review and report on areas of potential institutional risk and propose mitigations; manage the insurance program.

 

 

Skills & Experience

 

• A minimum of 15 years of relevant experience. The candidate will have either led an enterprise-wide Finance function or will have served as a senior Finance business partner for a major division or as a direct report to the Chief Financial Officer or equivalent.

• The candidate can currently be in another large highly regarded Non-Profit organization or in a For-Profit business but now committed to moving his/her career into an NP mission-focused enterprise.

• Experience working with senior executives to determine strategy and policy.

• Experience leading by example to ensure Finance is not a silo but deeply engaged in the programmatic and fundraising aspects of an enterprise.

• Track record of successfully delivering core Finance processes, including treasury services, accounts payable/receivable, and revenue processing.

• Understanding of, and familiarity with, legal and regulatory aspects of not-for-profit businesses.

• Nonprofit experience is preferred but not required.

• Ability to be both a strategic thinker and a hands-on operational leader.

• Enjoys operating in a fast-paced and demanding environment; a nimble and flexible style that can pivot in response to organizational priorities.

• A strong customer service orientation.

• Deep appreciation of UNICEF’s mission: a passion for children’s rights, improving global health, and reducing global poverty.

• Tech savvy: Keen familiarity with financial technology tools.

• An excellent mentor who takes pride in developing team members.

• Ability to travel domestically, if based remotely.

• Must demonstrate UNICEF USA Core Values: Trust, Respect, Accountability, Innovation, Teamwork, and Service.

• Must possess current and valid US Work Authorization and be eligible to work for any US employer without sponsorship.

• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance. CPA, CMA, and/or MBA preferred.
