The UN Secretary-General established the UN SDG Action Campaign to inspire people and organizations from all backgrounds and every part of the world to take actions to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), while holding decision-makers to account for progress society-wide. The UN SDG Action Campaign is hosted and supported by UNDP and is based in Bonn (Germany) with a lean team that marshals rapid support for new initiatives as opportunities arise and provides partners with on-demand strategic creative services that inspire SDG action with an engaged community of activists and concerned individuals.

Through compelling and creative SDG outreach and communications, the UN SDG Action Campaign serves UN Member States and the United Nations whilst bridging thinkers and doers from civil society, local governments, youth groups, think tanks, the arts and culture, the media and the business world. It mobilizes individuals to champion the SDGs in homes, communities and beyond. At a moment of acute crisis in our world, the UN SDG Action Campaign seizes opportunities to rethink messaging, calls to action and reorient policymaking towards the Goals.

Through tailored advocacy and communications, the Campaign builds powerful networks that reach millions worldwide, urge decision-makers to act and impel momentum. Finally, it uses data, technology and innovation to empower people with the knowledge and tools to become actively involved in supporting their governments with SDG implementation and to continue to involve as many people as possible in relevant decision-making processes.

 

The UN SDG Action Campaign aims to further strengthen its outreach, advocacy and strategic communication to underscore the positive impact of its work through advocacy initiatives designed to inspire and mobilize SDG action and engagement from individuals and organizations.

In order to effectively deliver on the above, the UN SDG Action Campaign is seeking to recruit a Communications Specialist reporting to the Outreach and Advocacy Specialist (P4) to support the development and implementation of the UN SDG Action Campaign communications strategy to enhance visibility and position the UN SDG Action Campaign through media-related activities, public mobilization campaigns, policy-focused advocacy with key stakeholders and influencers.

The Communications Specialist is expected to work closely with the Head of Communications and Content Creators to ensure effective and creative communications across platforms, initiatives and projects to drive engagement, and develop a strong community for the UN SDG Action Campaign.

S/he is expected to collaborate with the Partnership Specialist to capitalize on emerging partnerships and disseminate a coherent message throughout the unit. Likewise, the incumbent is expected to work in close coordination with other team members especially the Outreach and Advocacy Specialist (P4) from whom will derive strategic guidance on the impact of communications products.

Duties and Responsibilities

Develop and implement the digital community engagement strategy

  • Take the lead in defining digital engagement and community building strategies to support, build, grow and nurture the SDG community (made of both organizations and individuals) across sectors and regions.
  • Design and implement community engagement plans, including consultations, live chats, polling and challenges for specific campaign initiatives and events.
  • Design and coordinate the production of media, communications and social media assets and toolkits adaptations to multiple audiences and platforms and ensure their dissemination via the Campaign channels.
  • Work closely with the Digital Strategist and content creators in developing and maintaining digital platforms – websites, social media platforms, and tracking their performance.
  • Ensure the effective dissemination of the Campaign’s plans, partnerships, and initiatives.
  • Support the design of digital campaign tools such as the SDG Action Aggregator and other feedback mechanisms.
  • Provide communication advice and inputs to web-based knowledge management systems.

Planning and design of internal and external strategies for communications and outreach

  • Support the development and implementation of communications and advocacy strategies and campaigns.
  • Take the lead in outreach and digital promotion of Campaign events and activations throughout the year, including the UN SDG Action Awards and the Global Week to Act for the SDGs.
  • Work closely with the Lead for Communications and content creators and partners for the design and implementation of multimedia and social media assets fully aligned with the messaging and the creativity approach of the Campaign.
  • Increase a steady growth of the Campaign’s social media presence, whilst ensuring consistency of messaging, creativity and impact across all channels.
  • Support the Campaign’s digital strategy development and implementation.
  • Prepare detailed digital analytics to measure impact and reach

Support business development of communication products

  • Support the creation, promotion and maintenance of advocacy campaigns on the SDGs, in association with team members involved in the Cities and Local Governments initiative managed by the UN SDG Action Campaign.
  • Forging and maintaining partnerships with communications and creative partners.

Effective management of the communication effort of the office

  • Manage and mentor communication’s consultants.
  • Oversee the project delivery of digital communications projects.
  • Coordinates the creation, packaging and distribution of key messages and communications products.
  • Recommends enhancements to all internal and external communications instruments.
  • Coordination of the provision of digital support to partner and teams to fully leverage stories, multimedia, blogs, and other sources for content.

Required Skills and Experience
Education
  • Master’s degree or equivalent advanced university degree in communications, media studies, journalism, international relations, development or related fields
  • Substantive knowledge of the Sustainable Development Goals and of current international debates and negotiations on major global issues including climate change.
Experience, Knowledge, and Skills
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in digital communications and global advocacy campaigning in the context of the UN system is an asset.
  • Experience in digital community building is an asset.
  • Experience in digital platforms and social media management is an asset.
  • Proven excellent drafting skills including statements, blogs, articles and talking points.
  • Excellent communication skills, both spoken and written in English required.
  • Fluency in another UN language strongly desirable.
