Development & Outreach Intern

Application Deadline: 12 October 2022

Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking an intern for the Development and Outreach Department for its Copenhagen office to assist with communications. Ideally, the candidate will be available for 20 to 37 hours per week, depending on the associated ECTS-credits from the academic institution. Starting in February 2023, the duration of the internship will be 20 weeks, lasting until the end of June 2023. Internships are unpaid, and interns in Denmark must be enrolled as a student for the duration of their internship term.

Due to COVID-19, many of our global offices are operating in reduced capacities. The successful candidate may be required to work remotely as local mandates necessitate. We recognize that this moment, during the pandemic, is a uniquely difficult time for most people, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.

This internship is best suited for individuals interested in gaining experience within a small office of a large international non-profit organization. The intern will gain experience and skills in human rights outreach, communication, and event management. The internship offers flexibility and provides a comprehensive introduction to working in a human rights organization. Students will also have opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, professional development workshops, special events relating to human rights, as well as network with other HRW interns, volunteers, and employees. As an HRW intern, students will take skills acquired in school and apply them in a professional setting.

The main tasks during the internship may include:

Outreach and fundraising: The intern will assist in HRW’s work of promoting and protecting human rights with a focus on outreach and fundraising activities. Furthermore, the intern will support the team by planning and organizing events; help create content and strategy; draft documents and other correspondence related to donor outreach; learn to operate the fundraising and donor management database; conduct prospect research; conduct desk research for development and outreach projects; and support the development of the volunteer network for younger supporters (HRW NextGen).

Communication: Interns will assist with optimizing and deploying the communications strategy, that will enhance Human Rights Watch presence on social media. This will include attending weekly meetings with the communications team in Stockholm and drafting social media posts to help grow HRW’s social media presence. Interns will also help assist in producing content and writings for newsletters and invitations to events and seminars.

Qualifications: Interns must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program for the duration of the internship. Excellent communications skills in English and Danish are essential, and applicants enrolled in communications or human rights programs are encouraged to apply. Applicants pursuing professional bachelor programs may also be considered. Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated, creative, flexible, and detail- oriented with excellent time management skills. Experience with collaborating within a team is desirable. Experience with creating content for social media is highly desirable. Experience with graphical software editing programs such as the adobe-package is desirable. Internet research skills and familiarity with MS Office programs, such as Word and Excel, are essential.  The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated interest in communication, fundraising, and human rights.

Applicants who are offered an internship must possess valid work authorization in Denmark for the duration of the internship.

The internship is unpaid. Interns in Denmark must be an enrolled student for the duration of their internship term. The internship must be a part of their school program, to ensure that they receive funding from the government. Students may be able to arrange academic credit, as Human Rights Watch internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by HRW staff, and interaction with other Copenhagen based and international organizations alike. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.
