Women for Women is looking for a Global Communications Coordinator!
*Please note the location of this position is flexible within Africa, with a preference for WfWI country offices in Africa, including Kenya.*
The Global Communications Coordinator’s primary focus will be to gather, produce and disseminate visual assets, including stories, impact testimonials, and audio-visuals to help achieve the following overarching communications goals:
- Elevate the voices of the women we serve, demonstrating impact of WfWI’s programs
- Increase and retain a global community of supporters
- Increase WfW’s share of voice in humanitarian, international development and peacebuilding sectors
The position reports directly to the Director of Communications and External Relations based in WfWI’s Global Support Center (GSC) in Washington DC and works closely with GSC teams in the UK, Germany as well as with the Communications focal points in the Country Offices (COs).
This position requires up to 40% travel to our offices located in Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Sudan.
Main Duties and Resposibilites:
- Liaise with CO program and GSC Communications teams to gather and produce stories of impact
- Build a network of local photographers and videographers to assist with content collection
- Work closely with the Associate Director, Public Relations and Events on earned media opportunities
- Work closely with the Brand and Integrated Communications Manager to coordinate messaging and visual assets from COs for global campaigns as well as to organize, streamline and grow collection of WfWI stories and multimedia assets
- Conduct regular Communications trainings with COs focused on storytelling, photography and gathering of visual assets
Content Creation and storytelling:
- Collect and produce compelling content from each of our COs including photos, videos, testimonials and stories
- Be highly proactive and strategic in identifying and managing storytelling opportunities across COs – coordinating with Program teams and Communications focal points in COs to identify program participants to interview
- Conduct story gathering interviews with identified program participants and create impactful success stories that can be used across multiple channels such as website, social media, print and marketing collaterals
Visual Asset Collection:
- Implement our global content collection strategy in COs with guidance from Director of Communications at GSC US.
- Liaise with GSC Communications teams in US, UK and Germany to coordinate asset collection for global communication campaigns from country offices as required
- Support Communications focal points in COs to identify photographers, videographers and other creative agencies/consultants for visual asset collection as needed
- Conduct site visits to WfWI’s training centers in the COs to produce compelling visual assets
- Assist in information gathering for crisis/rapid response communications
Earned Media Support:
- Identify local and regional earned media opportunities in partnership with the Country Offices Conduct media training with designated media spokespersons in the COs and assist in briefing and preparing them for media opportunities (global and regional)
- Cultivate relationships with local and regional media outlets, reporters and journalists
- Write OpEds and Blogs on behalf of COs, supporting Advocacy, Communications and Program teams in the COs which can be pitched to media as needed
- Stay current on trending news cycles and within contexts of the countries we work in
Process Management and Coordination:
- Conduct regular message and storytelling trainings with country office staff
- Champion WfWI’s new brand, supporting its rollout in COs, working in close collaboration with Brand and Integrated Communications Manager in GSC US
- Ensure approved visual assets are shared across COs and GSC teams, following content sharing processes
- Ensure appropriate consent forms are signed and secured from those being featured in the assets
Skills and Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in relevant field required
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in communications, journalism or related field required
- Minimum of 3 years experience in a global organization
- Excellent story writing and messaging development skills, including verbal communication skills in English
- Passionate about using storytelling techniques to champion women’s rights
- Expert level knowledge in photography and in collecting videos using smartphone or DSLR
- Working knowledge of tools like Adobe Creative Suite, video editing tools, Microsoft Teams and Office apps
- Experience in collecting assets used for digital as well as print dissemination
- Ability to travel to country offices (extensive travel required)
- Self-starter who can work both independently and collaboratively with a team.
- Ability to balance and prioritize tasks and stay focused in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
- Experience working in conflict-affected areas and with vulnerable populations
- Ability to work within a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic team and understand the challenges of operating in insecure environments
- Understanding of women’s rights issues
- Working knowledge of a language of WfWI’s country teams (French, Kiswahili, etc.) highly desirable; knowledge of other local languages would be an advantage
- May require bending, lifting, standing, sitting, computer work, etc.
