Background:

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is seeking a qualified research consultant to conduct research on crimes in the fishery sector. The consultant will contribute to the development of evidence-based policies and strategies to combat transnational organized crime and illegal activities in the fisheries industry. This consulting position offers an opportunity to work with a dynamic team of experts and make a meaningful impact on global efforts to address crime in the fishery sector.

Duties and responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the designated officer, the research consultant will be responsible for the following tasks:

  1. Conduct comprehensive research on crimes and illegal activities in the fishery sector, including but not limited to illegal fishing, human trafficking, corruption, and money laundering.
  2. Analyze existing data and literature on the subject, identify gaps and challenges, and propose recommendations for addressing key issues.
  3. Collaborate with relevant stakeholders, including government agencies, international organizations, academia, and civil society, to gather information and insights on fishery-related crimes.
  4. Prepare research reports, policy briefs, and other written materials to disseminate findings and recommendations to policymakers and practitioners.
  5. Provide technical support and expertise to UNODC programmes and initiatives aimed at combating crime in the fishery sector.
  6. Participate in meetings, workshops, and conferences related to the research topic, both internally within UNODC and externally with partner organizations.
  7. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor to support the work of the department and contribute to achieving its objectives.

Qualifications: Education:

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in criminology, law, international relations, or a related field is required.

Experience:

  • A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in research, analysis, and policy development related to crime prevention and criminal justice is required.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the fields of fisheries management, marine conservation, or environmental law is highly desirable.
  • Experience working with international organizations, government agencies, and/or non-governmental organizations on transnational crime issues is an asset.

Language:

  • Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
