About Us:

Are you passionate about defending the rights and dignity of all individuals? The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is seeking a committed and empathetic individual to join us as a Human Rights Officer. In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to be a champion for human rights, working tirelessly to promote justice, equality, and respect for human dignity worldwide.

Why This Role Matters:

Human rights are the foundation of a just and peaceful world, yet they are often under threat in many parts of the globe. As a Human Rights Officer, you’ll play a crucial role in upholding international human rights standards, monitoring human rights situations, and advocating for the protection of vulnerable individuals and communities. Your work will contribute to building a world where every person’s rights are respected and upheld.

Your Impact:

As a Human Rights Officer, you’ll work closely with OHCHR colleagues and partners to address human rights challenges and promote accountability for human rights violations. Your efforts will help to ensure that victims of human rights abuses receive justice and support, and that perpetrators are held accountable for their actions. By advocating for human rights principles and engaging with governments, civil society, and other stakeholders, you’ll help to create a world where human rights are universally respected and protected.

What You’ll Do:

  • Monitoring and Reporting: Conduct research and analysis on human rights issues, including monitoring human rights developments and documenting human rights violations. Prepare reports and briefings on human rights situations for OHCHR leadership and other stakeholders.

  • Advocacy and Outreach: Engage with governments, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to promote human rights principles and advocate for the protection of human rights defenders and vulnerable groups. Represent OHCHR in meetings, conferences, and other events to raise awareness of human rights issues and priorities.

  • Capacity Building: Provide technical assistance and capacity-building support to national authorities, civil society organizations, and other partners to strengthen their ability to promote and protect human rights. Develop and deliver training programs and workshops on human rights standards and mechanisms.

  • Policy Development: Contribute to the development of OHCHR policies and strategies on specific human rights issues, providing input and recommendations based on your expertise and analysis. Support the implementation of OHCHR’s mandate and priorities in line with international human rights law and standards.

Why You Should Join Us:

Working with OHCHR offers a unique opportunity to make a tangible impact on the lives of people around the world. You’ll be part of a dedicated team of human rights professionals who are committed to promoting justice, equality, and dignity for all. Your work will contribute to advancing human rights globally and building a more just and inclusive society for future generations.

  • Experience: A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in human rights, law, international relations, or a related field, preferably in a multicultural or international environment. Experience working on human rights issues in a country or regional context is highly desirable.

  • Education: Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in human rights, law, political science, international relations, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

  • Skills: Strong analytical and research skills, with the ability to gather and analyze information from a variety of sources. Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex ideas and concepts to diverse audiences.

  • Languages: Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
