Background:

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking a Marine and Coastal Environmental Management Consultant to join our team in Nairobi. UNEP is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

Duties and responsibilities:

Under the overall supervision of the designated officer, the consultant will perform the following duties:

  1. Conduct research and analysis on marine and coastal environmental issues, including but not limited to biodiversity conservation, pollution control, sustainable fisheries management, and climate change adaptation.

  2. Provide technical expertise and support in the development, implementation, and evaluation of marine and coastal environmental management projects and programmes.

  3. Collaborate with relevant stakeholders, including governments, non-governmental organizations, and other UN agencies, to promote integrated coastal zone management and marine conservation initiatives.

  4. Assist in the organization and facilitation of workshops, meetings, and training sessions related to marine and coastal environmental management.

  5. Prepare reports, briefs, and other communication materials to disseminate research findings, best practices, and policy recommendations in the field of marine and coastal environmental management.

  6. Contribute to fundraising efforts and project proposal development to secure financial support for marine and coastal environmental initiatives.

Qualifications: Education:

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in marine science, environmental management, natural resource management, or a related field is required.

Experience:

  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in marine and coastal environmental management, including experience in project management, research, and policy analysis, is required.
  • Experience working with international organizations, government agencies, and/or non-governmental organizations on marine and coastal environmental issues is desirable.
  • Experience in developing countries or regions with significant coastal areas is an asset.

Language:

  • Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.

Ability to conduct research, analyze data, and develop evidence-based recommendations.
