Detailed Description

The John Templeton Foundation’s (JTF) Grant Program is now open to fund research and catalyzes conversations that inspire people with awe and wonder.

The vision is to become a global catalyst for discoveries that contribute to human flourishing.

The work supported by the John Templeton Foundation crosses disciplinary, religious, and geographical boundaries. They fund work on subjects ranging from black holes and evolution to creativity, forgiveness, and free will. They also encourage civil, informed dialogue among scientists, philosophers, theologians, and the public at large.

Funding Areas

Science & The Big Questions: The Science & the Big Questions Funding Area supports innovative efforts to address the deepest questions facing humankind. Why are they here? How can they flourish? What are the fundamental structures of reality? What can they know about the nature and purposes of the divine?

Character Virtue Development: Throughout history, people of all cultures have strived to find ways to empower themselves and their societies to create lives of purpose and meaning. The ancient wisdom traditions around the world offer valuable insights into how people can develop the virtues of character needed to achieve that aim, but they still have much to learn about the process and practice of character development.

Individual Freedom & Free Markets: The Individual Freedom & Free Markets Funding Area supports education, research, and outreach projects to promote individual freedom, free markets, free competition, and entrepreneurship. Grounded in the ideas of classical liberal political economy and with a commitment to the moral equality of all human beings, they seek and develop projects that aim to advance freedom, widespread prosperity, and human flourishing for all.

Exceptional Cognitive Talent & Genius: Throughout history, the insights and ideas of a relatively small number of individuals account for many of the most dramatic cultural, scientific, and technological advances. Sir John Templeton saw the potential for truly exceptional, “one-in-a-million” cognitive geniuses to bring about transformative benefits for humanity.

Genetics: Research in genetics holds enormous promise for alleviating future sickness and poverty while helping realize humanity’s fullest physical and material potential.

Voluntary Family Planning: The Voluntary Family Planning funding area supports research, programs, and policy development efforts around the world that seek to better understand factors that influence family planning decisions, provide information on and access to family planning methods, and strengthen policy related to effective family planning. They are particularly interested in partnering with faith-based organizations to support this work in their local communities. The Foundation only funds research and programs that affirm the value of human life from conception until natural death.

  • The grant duration is often up to three years. In rare instances the Foundation may support a project for up to five years. The Foundation will not fund any project for more than five years.
