South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is a government agency that was set up in April 2005 to help the Department of Social Development give out social grants. The DSD keeps an eye on the Agency, but it doesn’t control how it works.

 

It was also made to move the responsibility for social security from the provinces of South Africa to the national government. It reports to the Department of Social Development (DSD). The main jobs of the parastatal are to manage and pay out social grants. This includes processing applications, checking and approving applications, distributing and paying out grants to people who are eligible, making sure the quality is good, and preventing and finding fraud.

 

From April 2001 to March 2006, South Africa had 3.8 million people on social welfare. By 2017, that number had grown to 17 million.

The Special COVID–19 Social Relief of Distress Grant was given to millions of South Africans from May 2020 to April 2021.
