About Directorate of Post Graduate Studies (DPGS)
The University of Dar es salaam offers various postgraduate programmes leading to the award of postgraduate diploma, masters and PhD degrees. The programmes are designed to produce highly competent experts, academics, researchers, industry leaders, government bureaucrats, civil society leaders and entrepreneurs that can address local, national and international challenges.
The Directorate of Postgraduate Studies (DPGS) was established in 2009 to coordinate all postgraduate studies at the University of Dar es Salaam. Before that, postgraduate studies was coordinated by the School of Graduate Studies.
In the past twenty three years the postgraduate students’ population has increased from about 100 in 1993/1994 to about 4500 in 2016/2017. Female students constitute about one third of the postgraduate students. During the same period, postgraduate programmes (including taught programmes at PhD level) has increased from 48 to over 100. We have also programmes that are offered through online and distance learning.
Doctor of Laws (LL.D.), Doctor of Literature (D.Lit.) and Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) are retained as higher doctorates to be awarded in accordance with regulations relating to higher doctorates at the University of Dar es Salaam.
The University of Dar es Salaam Vision 2061 aim to ensure that graduate and professional students are actively and deliberately involved in research activities outlined in the institutional research agenda and aligned with respective country and global needs. The University is already well-placed to play a strategic national and leadership role in postgraduate training and well equipped with human resources as well as teaching and research facilities.
