Bafana Bafana star Lyle Foster nearing move to English Championship leaders

Lyle Foster in action for Bafana Bafana

According to rumours, Lyle Foster of the Bafana Bafana is almost signed by English Championship club Burnley.

The 22-year-old is scheduled to have a medical at the team where he will play for current Burnley manager and former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany of Belgium.

Burnley has been in fantastic form this year and presently holds the top spot in the standings with a five-point lead over second-place Sheffield United. They are on track to be promoted to the Premier League next season.

Burnley have won 18 of their 28 games, which has included winning their last eight consecutive league games.

Foster might assist Kompany’s club in achieving their goal of scoring more goals as they seek to enhance their promotion campaign.

Foster has had a productive season in Belgium, scoring eight goals and contributing four assists for Westerlo in the Jupiler Pro League. Additionally, Kompany and Burnley assistant manager Craig Bellamy were also spotted last week watching him play.

If a trade is sanctioned, Foster might not start for Burnley right away. But because he is still a relatively young athlete and will grow, he could end up being a smart long-term investment.

Foster, an Orlando Pirates youth system graduate, began his European adventure in 2019 when he left the Sea Robbers to join French Ligue 1 club Monaco. Before joining Westerlo last year, he spent time with Cercle Brugge (on loan) and Vitoria de Guimaraes in the interim.

Foster has played for Bafana since 2019 and has represented South Africa at several youth levels.

In a 2-1 loss to Morocco in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in June of last year, he scored his first Bafana goal. He has only ever scored once for the national squad.
