Introduction The United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan is seeking an Associate Political Affairs Officer to contribute to its efforts in promoting peace and stability in the region. This role entails engaging with various stakeholders, analyzing political developments, and supporting conflict resolution and peacebuilding initiatives.

Responsibilities

  1. Stakeholder Engagement: Liaise with government officials, civil society organizations, and other relevant actors to gather information and facilitate dialogue on political issues.
  2. Political Analysis: Monitor and analyze political developments, conflict dynamics, and peace processes in South Sudan, providing timely reports and assessments.
  3. Conflict Resolution: Support conflict resolution efforts through mediation, negotiation, and facilitation of dialogue between conflicting parties.
  4. Peacebuilding Initiatives: Contribute to the design and implementation of peacebuilding projects and activities aimed at promoting reconciliation and social cohesion.
  5. Reporting and Briefing: Prepare reports, briefings, and presentations for senior management and external partners on political developments and mission activities.
  6. Coordination: Coordinate with other UN agencies, international organizations, and diplomatic missions to ensure coherence and synergy in peace and political initiatives.
  7. Capacity Building: Provide training and capacity-building support to national counterparts and local communities on conflict resolution and peacebuilding.

Qualifications

  • Education: Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in political science, international relations, conflict resolution, or a related field.
  • Experience: At least two years of relevant professional experience in political affairs, conflict resolution, peacebuilding, or related areas. Experience in field operations or with the UN is desirable.
  • Skills: Strong analytical and communication skills, ability to work effectively in multicultural environments, and proficiency in computer applications.
  • Languages: Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of other UN languages, particularly Arabic, is an asset.
