Background Information – India:

Angul, located in the Indian state of Odisha, is an aspirational district rich in mineral and natural resources. The district is characterized by a strong manufacturing sector due to the abundance of coal, kyanite, graphite, fireclay, and other raw materials. However, rapid industrial expansion has led to various environmental challenges such as loss of biodiversity, pollution, and degradation of water bodies.

In alignment with global goals for sustainable development, the Angul district aims to become a model of mining area development, focusing on ecological protection, cultural heritage preservation, and human development.

To achieve this vision, the Angul District Administration, in partnership with UNOPS and UNEP, plans to develop and implement a district-level roadmap on circular and inclusive green economy. This program will focus on priority sectors including plastic, electronics, textiles, aluminum, steel, infrastructure, and water management.

UNOPS will support the DMFT Angul by establishing a Programme Management Unit (PMU) to advise the district administration on program management, implementation, monitoring, and reporting, while UNEP will serve as a knowledge partner, bringing international best practices and expertise to the project.
