Position Overview:
The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is seeking a Consultant on Climate Mobility and Human Security in the Pacific to support its initiatives addressing climate-induced migration and its impact on human security in the Pacific region. This consultancy offers an opportunity to contribute to research, policy analysis, and capacity-building efforts aimed at addressing the challenges of climate-related displacement and promoting sustainable solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct research and analysis on climate-induced mobility trends, including displacement, relocation, and planned migration, in the Pacific region.
- Assess the socio-economic impacts of climate-induced mobility on affected communities, including vulnerabilities, risks, and adaptation strategies.
- Review existing policies, legal frameworks, and institutional mechanisms related to climate mobility and human security in Pacific island countries.
- Identify good practices and lessons learned in addressing climate-related displacement and promoting resilience-building measures in the Pacific context.
- Provide technical support and capacity-building assistance to national governments and regional organizations in developing policies and strategies for climate mobility management.
- Facilitate stakeholder consultations, workshops, and knowledge-sharing events to raise awareness and build consensus on climate mobility issues and solutions.
- Prepare reports, briefs, and other knowledge products to disseminate research findings, policy recommendations, and best practices.
- Collaborate with other UN agencies, academic institutions, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders working on climate change, migration, and human security.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Advanced degree (Master’s or equivalent) in social sciences, environmental studies, development studies, or a related field.
- At least 5 years of relevant experience in research, policy analysis, or project management, with a focus on climate change, migration, and/or human security issues.
- Demonstrated expertise in conducting qualitative and quantitative research, including data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
- Familiarity with the socio-economic and environmental challenges facing Pacific island countries, particularly in the context of climate change and sustainable development.
- Excellent writing and communication skills, with the ability to convey complex concepts and findings in a clear and concise manner.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in multicultural and multidisciplinary teams.
- Fluency in English is required; knowledge of other UN languages and Pacific languages is an asset.
