Job Description: The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking a consultant to provide expertise in critical mineral resources. The consultant will contribute to UNEP’s efforts in assessing the environmental impacts and sustainable management of critical minerals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Research: Conduct research on critical mineral resources, including their distribution, extraction methods, and environmental impacts.
- Data Analysis: Analyze data related to critical mineral production, consumption, and trade patterns.
- Environmental Assessment: Assess the environmental impacts of critical mineral extraction and processing, including land degradation, water pollution, and biodiversity loss.
- Policy Analysis: Analyze existing policies and regulations related to critical mineral management and provide recommendations for improving sustainability.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Consult with relevant stakeholders, including government agencies, industry representatives, and civil society organizations, to gather input and feedback.
- Report Writing: Prepare a comprehensive report summarizing key findings, recommendations, and best practices for the sustainable management of critical minerals.
- Capacity Building: Provide training and capacity-building support to UNEP staff and partners on critical mineral issues.
Qualifications:
- Education: Advanced degree (Master’s or equivalent) in environmental science, geology, economics, or a related field.
- Experience: Minimum of five years of professional experience in environmental assessment, natural resource management, or related fields, with a focus on critical minerals.
- Skills: Strong research and analytical skills, excellent writing and communication skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team, familiarity with international environmental agreements and frameworks.
- Languages: Proficiency in English required. Knowledge of another UN language is an asset.
Duration: The consultancy is for a fixed-term period, with a duration to be determined based on project needs and funding availability.
