Overview of the Functions of the Post:
Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences (ADG/SHS), the incumbent will be responsible for:
- Providing strategic direction and intellectual leadership to leverage the social and human sciences for building inclusive societies.
- Managing the division, ensuring effective planning and follow-up, resource mobilization, and implementing programs in field offices.
- Overseeing the implementation of recommendations on the ethics of artificial intelligence and neurotechnology.
- Organizing global forums on ethics and youth, and ensuring cooperation with other sectors for efficient implementation.
- Representing SHS in various forums and overseeing the delivery of sections under the division.
Required Qualifications:
Education:
- Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in social and human sciences, public policies, economics, technology, or related fields.
Work Experience:
- Minimum 15 years of progressive relevant professional experience, including at least five years at the international level.
- Strong experience in policy development, conducting and overseeing research, establishing partnerships, advocacy, and resource mobilization.
Skills and competencies:
- Commitment to UNESCO’s mandate and values.
- Institutional leadership capacity, diplomacy, and political astuteness.
- Strategic planning, management, and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in English or French and working knowledge of the other language.
Desirable Qualifications:
Education:
- PhD in social and human sciences, economics, public policies, or related fields.
Work Experience:
- Professional experience in a multilateral setting, with knowledge of international cooperation and development agendas.
Languages:
- Knowledge of another official language of UNESCO (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, and/or Spanish).

- UNESCO offers a basic salary and benefits such as annual leave, family allowance, medical insurance, and a pension plan.
- The approximate annual starting salary for this position is US $164,441.
