Background:

The Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) is offering an internship opportunity for a dynamic and motivated individual to join our team in New York. DESA is the focal point within the United Nations for addressing issues related to economic development, social development, and environmental sustainability. We provide analysis and policy advice on a wide range of socio-economic issues to support sustainable development efforts worldwide.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of a senior staff member, the intern will undertake the following tasks:

  1. Assist in the collection, compilation, and analysis of statistical data on various socio-economic indicators, including but not limited to population, poverty, education, and employment.

  2. Support the preparation and dissemination of statistical publications, reports, and databases, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and adherence to established guidelines.

  3. Conduct literature reviews and research on emerging trends and methodologies in the field of statistics, with a focus on enhancing the quality and relevance of data for policy analysis and decision-making.

  4. Provide administrative and logistical support for meetings, workshops, and conferences organized by the department, including drafting background documents, taking minutes, and coordinating event logistics.

  5. Assist in the development and implementation of capacity-building activities to strengthen national statistical systems in developing countries, including training workshops and technical assistance programmes.

  6. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor to support the work of the department and contribute to achieving its objectives.

Qualifications: Education:

  • Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate (Master’s or Ph.D.) degree programme in statistics, economics, social sciences, or a related field. Candidates who have recently graduated (within one year) from such programmes may also be considered.

Experience:

  • Previous experience in statistical analysis, data management, or research is desirable but not required. However, candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in statistical methods and their application to socio-economic issues.

Language:

  • Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an asset.

Competencies:

  • Analytical Skills: Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret statistical data from various sources. Proficiency in statistical software (e.g., R, STATA, SPSS) is an advantage.
  • Communication: excellent communication skills, including the ability to convey complex information clearly and concisely in written and oral formats.
  • Teamwork: the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues to achieve common goals and foster a positive work environment.
  • Planning and Organizing: Strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines.
