Overview of the Functions of the Post:
The Internship in Communications and Public Engagement is within the Division for Communications and Public Engagement, reporting to the Office of the Director-General. Interns will assist in various projects of the Division, contributing to the implementation of UNESCO’s communication strategy and ensuring coordination and delivery of communications across multiple platforms.
Tasks:
- Social media: Assist in preparation, drafting, translation, and editing of social media assets. Assist in graphic design, on-site interview filming, and post-production. Assist in newsletter creation and editorial scheduling.
- Web: Assist in creating new websites, translation, drafting technical and editorial documentation, content upload, summary/analytical tasks, SEO reports, web mastering, editing, and graphic design.
- Press: Translation of press releases and media advisories, preparation of daily press briefings, content preparation for press, and support for special on-site events.
- Photo: Participate in shooting and post-production, organize and catalogue images.
- Publishing and Branding: Provide editorial and technical assistance on publication projects, assist in photo research, contribute to projects promoting the UNESCO brand, assist in IPR issues and internal quality control processes.
- UNESCO Campuses: Assist in organizing thematic conferences and debates, undertake research of schools worldwide, and contribute to communication strategy and content preparation.
- Green Citizens Initiative: Draft articles, improve platform’s SEO, develop relations with universities, assist in communication tasks, and prepare visibility reports.
- UNESCO Courier (magazine): Assist in selecting, editing, and publishing articles, communicate with partners, contribute to distribution network, and assist in promotion and marketing.

Required Qualifications:
- Age: At least 20 years old.
- Academic Qualifications: Enrolled in or recently graduated from a graduate program (Master’s degree, PhD, or equivalent), or in secretarial/assistant or technical/professional assignments.
- Languages: Excellent command of English or French, with a working knowledge of the other language being an asset.
- Computer Skills: Excellent knowledge of computer systems and office-related software.
- Team Player: Ability to work well in a team and adapt to an international working environment.
- Communication Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Education: Master’s degree (or equivalent) in communication, journalism, digital media, translation, intellectual property law, or environment.
- Languages: Excellent knowledge of another UN official language (Spanish, Russian, Arabic, or Chinese).
- Skills and Competencies: Good communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills; strong writing skills; creativity; attention to detail; competency in Photoshop; knowledge of Drupal.
Benefits and Entitlements:
- Interns are not remunerated by UNESCO. No compensation, financial or otherwise, is provided for internship assignments.
- Interns are entitled to 2.5 days of leave per month during their internship.
Selection and Recruitment Process:
- The UNESCO Internships Program is open in January and July each year. Candidates apply to the vacancy matching their expertise. Applications remain in the intern talent pool for 6 months.
- Candidates selected will be contacted directly by relevant hiring managers. Those not selected may reapply when new vacancies are released.
