Overview of the Functions of the Post:

The National Professional Officer will contribute to the design, coordination, and implementation of activities under UNESCO´s Natural Sciences Major Programme II in Peru. The objective is to support Peru in implementing the National Development Plan (NDP), 2022–26 United Nations Sustainable Development Country Framework (UNSDCF), and 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Participate in UNESCO´s Regular Programme (C/5) work plans and policy formulation discussions.
  • Coordinate and monitor the development, implementation, and evaluation of programmes and projects in the natural sciences in Latin America.
  • Lead interdisciplinary efforts in areas of environment, biodiversity, climate change, disaster risk reduction, and science education.
  • Provide technical advice and support to national institutions on science, technology, and innovation for policy and research-oriented activities.
  • Develop and maintain strategic partnerships with other UN agencies and development partners.
  • Identify and contribute to the formulation of the UNESCO Office in Lima resource mobilization strategy.
  • Prepare and submit quarterly/yearly work plans and reports.

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in natural sciences-related disciplines or engineering.
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience in natural sciences, science coordination, programme management, and science policy.
  • Experience in initiatives related to climate change and biodiversity sustainability with the participation of indigenous peoples’ communities.
  • Excellent programme and project management skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent knowledge of English and very good knowledge of Spanish.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Advanced university degree (PhD or equivalent) in natural sciences-related disciplines.
  • Experience in the field of natural sciences within government, academia, NGOs, or the private sector.
  • Knowledge of UNESCO’s work and programmes in the natural sciences.
  • Knowledge of another official UNESCO language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian).

Benefits and entitlements:

UNESCO’s salaries consist of a basic salary and other benefits, which may include 30 days annual leave, family allowance, medical insurance, pension plan, etc. The approximated annual starting salary for this post is USD 52,648.
