Background:

The Department of Peace Operations (DPO) is seeking a motivated and talented individual to join as a Political Affairs Intern—Research Analysis in our New York office. The DPO works to prevent conflict, maintain peace, and promote sustainable development in regions affected by conflicts and crises. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in political analysis and research within the context of peace and humanitarian affairs.

Duties and Responsibilities: Under the supervision of a senior political affairs officer, the intern will be responsible for the following tasks:

  1. Conduct in-depth research and analysis on political developments, conflict dynamics, and peace processes in assigned regions, with a focus on identifying emerging trends, challenges, and opportunities.

  2. Support the preparation of briefing materials, background papers, and analytical reports on specific thematic issues or country situations, drawing on a range of primary and secondary sources.

  3. Assist in monitoring and reporting on political developments, including the implementation of peace agreements, ceasefire arrangements, and other relevant initiatives.

  4. Provide support in organizing meetings, conferences, and other events related to political affairs, including drafting agendas, preparing background documents, and liaising with participants.

  5. Contribute to the development and implementation of outreach and communication strategies to promote awareness and understanding of peace and humanitarian issues among key stakeholders.

  6. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor to support the work of the department and contribute to achieving its objectives.

Qualifications: Education:

  • Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate (Master’s or Ph.D.) degree programme in political science, international relations, peace and conflict studies, or a related field. Candidates who have recently graduated (within one year) from such programmes may also be considered.

Experience:

  • Previous experience in political analysis, research, or related fields is desirable but not required. Candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in peace and humanitarian affairs and a willingness to learn.

Language:

  • Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an asset.

Competencies:

  • Analytical skills: ability to collect, analyze, and interpret complex political information from diverse sources. Strong research and writing skills are essential.
  • Communication: excellent communication skills, including the ability to convey complex ideas clearly and concisely in written and oral formats.
  • Teamwork: the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues to achieve common goals and foster a positive work environment.
  • Adaptability: willingness to adapt to changing priorities and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
