Objectives of the Program:

This position is part of the Core Predictable Country Presence (CPCP) and aims to provide authoritative advice to national public health authorities. The Public Health Specialist (Epidemiology) will lead the epidemiological work of the country office, support policy formulation, undertake research, and provide technical guidance on epidemic and disease-trends forecasting and detection systems.

Description of Duties:

  • Coordinate with technical focal points at regional and headquarters levels to provide authoritative advice to national public health authorities.
  • Lead the epidemiological work of the country office to underpin policy formulation.
  • Undertake research and leadership on the design and analysis of policy research programs and projects.
  • Ensure access to relevant country-specific health-related data, analyze datasets, and provide insights into the country’s health context and epidemiological situation.
  • Serve as a focal person for all internal and external requests related to country-specific data and ensure government agreement for data use and dissemination.
  • Assist in enhancing national capacities in epidemic and disease-trends’ forecasting and detection systems.
  • Develop and coordinate training courses for public health professionals on epidemiological surveillance and outbreak investigation.
  • Support field investigations of public health events and promote infection prevention and control programs.
  • Participate in risk assessments for unusual health events and generate knowledge to support evidence-based policy and decision-making.
  • Collaborate with relevant authorities on the development and maintenance of a national system for comprehensive data collection and trend analysis of public health events.
  • Analyze, interpret, and publish surveillance data through WHO and peer-reviewed publications.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Advanced university degree (master’s level) in epidemiology, public health, medical, or related studies.
  • Desirable: PhD in Epidemiology or social study research.
  • Experience: Minimum of seven (07) years of relevant work experience, including in epidemiology or public health research, preferably in an international context.
  • Skills: Expertise in public health research, epidemiological data collection, analysis, and interpretation. Proficiency in statistical software packages. Strong knowledge of policy analysis and disease profiles. Training skills.

Remuneration: The annual base salary starts at USD 77,326, with additional benefits including a variable post adjustment, 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
