Org. Setting and Reporting:

The Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) is responsible for providing leadership, operational support, and oversight of the United Nations security management system (UNSMS) globally. UNDSS enables the safe and effective delivery of United Nations programs and activities in complex and challenging environments while maximizing resources. The Department’s mission is to enable United Nations system program activities through trusted security leadership and solutions. This position is within the Middle East and North Africa section (MENA), Division of Field Operations (DFO), New York. The incumbent will report to the MENA Regional Section Chief through a designated Security Coordination Officer at P4 level. The DFO serves as the safety and security focal point for field duty stations, providing primary operational and technical support. The Division is responsible for daily security coordination with the field.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the implementation of security policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Provide technical advice and support to field duty stations on security risk management.
  • Monitor security situations and provide timely updates and advisories.
  • Conduct security risk assessments and develop mitigation measures.
  • Coordinate security training and awareness programs for United Nations personnel.
  • Liaise with host government security counterparts and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Assist in emergency response and crisis management activities as required.
  • Contribute to the development and review of security plans and protocols.

Education:

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in security management, international relations, political science, or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Job-Specific Qualification:

  • Certification in security risk management or related fields is desirable.

Work Experience:

  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in security management, risk assessment, or related fields is required.
  • Experience working in high-risk environments, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa region, is desirable.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required.
  • Knowledge of Arabic or other official UN languages is desirable.

Assessment:

  • Qualified candidates may undergo an assessment exercise as part of the recruitment process.
