Standard Job Description: Shelter Associate

Organizational Setting and Work Relationships:
The Shelter Associate supports comprehensive sectoral needs assessments in coordination with relevant sectors such as protection, programme, community services, public health, WASH, administration, and supply. This role involves gathering quantitative and qualitative data on the profile, needs, and living conditions of displaced populations and host communities. The incumbent assists in the day-to-day operations of construction and general infrastructure projects within the Area of Responsibility (AoR) to ensure compliance with established standards and procedures.

Duties:

  • Assist in shelter needs assessments and beneficiary selection processes.
  • Support the development and updating of shelter strategies.
  • Manage construction and infrastructure projects within the AoR.
  • Coordinate with other relevant sectors for synchronized implementation.
  • Provide technical support and coordination with stakeholders.
  • Participate in coordination meetings and disseminate information.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • G6: 3 years relevant experience with High School Diploma; or 2 years relevant work experience with Bachelor or equivalent or higher.

Skills Required:

  • Knowledge of SPHERE standards and basic survey equipment.
  • Experience in shelter and settlement need assessments.
  • Familiarity with UNHCR shelter standards.
  • Proficiency in computer-assisted design software (e.g., AutoCAD).
  • Good communication and coordination skills.

Desired Candidate Profile:
The Shelter Associate will be based at the UNHCR Sub-Office Gedaref, supporting the humanitarian shelter response for IDPs, refugees, and asylum seekers in Gedaref state. The ideal candidate should have prior experience in implementing shelter and infrastructure projects in a humanitarian context, conducting technical assessments, and preparing technical documents. Familiarity with Sudanese engineering standards is essential, and previous experience in Gedaref will be considered an asset. Effective communication, interpersonal, and planning skills are key to the position.
