Description:

The Department of Safety and Security (DSS) is seeking a highly skilled Strategic Communications Officer to join our team in New York. As a Strategic Communications Officer, you will be responsible for developing and implementing strategic communication initiatives to enhance the department’s visibility and promote its objectives.

Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and execute comprehensive communication strategies to effectively convey the department’s mission, goals, and activities to internal and external stakeholders.
  2. Lead the creation and dissemination of compelling communication materials, including press releases, articles, speeches, and multimedia content.
  3. Manage the department’s digital presence, including website content, social media channels, and online campaigns.
  4. Coordinate media relations activities, including responding to media inquiries, arranging interviews, and organizing press briefings.
  5. Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to ensure consistency in messaging and branding across all communication channels.
  6. Monitor and analyze media coverage and public perception of the department, and provide regular reports and analysis to senior management.
  7. Provide communication support for high-profile events, conferences, and other departmental activities.
  8. Stay updated on emerging trends and best practices in strategic communication and recommend innovative approaches to enhance the department’s communication efforts.

Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field.
  • Minimum of seven years of relevant experience in strategic communication, public relations, or media relations.
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing successful communication strategies in a complex organizational environment.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to create clear, concise, and persuasive communication materials.
  • Strong interpersonal and networking skills, with the ability to build relationships and collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience working with digital communication tools and platforms, including social media, website content management systems, and email marketing software.
  • Knowledge of international security issues and experience working in a multicultural environment is desirable.
  • Fluency in English is required; proficiency in other UN languages is an asset.
