BACKGROUND

This is a local recruitment open exclusively to Lao nationals, individuals with residence status, or the appropriate employment visa for Lao PDR. The remuneration and benefits package for this position are established with reference to the local labor market and in line with the IUCN conditions of service for Lao PDR.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Project Communication Officer for the Gibbon and People in Harmony project is tasked with achieving the project objectives outlined below. Primarily, the communication officer will focus on developing communication materials, including a website, social media page, and quarterly newsletters.

The position’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

SPECIFIC DUTIES

  • Collaborate closely with the line manager to develop a draft work plan/concept note and travel plans.
  • Manage the Gibbon and People in Harmony (PHP) NPA website and social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube), including daily monitoring, posting, and content development.
  • Organize and maintain an online archive database and a library with Lao-language resources related to PHP NPA.
  • Translate project outputs/communication materials from English to Lao and vice versa as needed.
  • Design and produce an annual report and quarterly newsletter by consolidating information and data on project activities, results, and achievements.
  • Create knowledge, information, and education materials from PHP NPA research results for nature-based tourism marketing purposes or community outreach and awareness.
  • Assist in organizing community outreach campaigns and events, such as the Annual Guardian Village Festival or other relevant annual days.
  • Support the delivery of environmental messages to communities through various media, including dance, song, story, dramatic play, movies, presentations, and interpretive signage.
  • Liaise with IUCN program officers, communications staff, local media, and conservation partners.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with journalists and media outlets to increase coverage of conservation issues in the media.
  • Coordinate with the Senior Communications and Outreach Officer (Viet Nam Country Office) and the Stakeholder Engagement and Communications Officer (Asia Regional Office) for editorial feedback and content dissemination.

OTHER DUTIES

Undertake any other duties assigned by the country office and programme/projects, including supporting/assisting in the organization of workshops, seminars, campaigns, events, and project review meetings.

REQUIREMENTS

General experience: The Project Communication Officer should have at least 5 years of relevant experience in communications and/or social media content creation for the private sector, freelance work, or international development/donor projects. Qualifications in website design and IT are preferred. The candidate must possess excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills and have experience working effectively in a multicultural environment.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, IT, or a related field.

Specific Skills and Experience:

  • Excellent written and oral English and Lao language skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Proficiency in designing visually appealing and user-friendly websites.
  • Familiarity with Content Management Systems (CMS), particularly WordPress or similar platforms.
  • Knowledge of web development technologies, design tools, and programming languages.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher) and Adobe Photoshop and Pagemaker.
  • Experience in social media management is advantageous.
  • Background in nature conservation and/or environmental projects is desirable.
