About GCE A-Level

The Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education Advanced Level (GCE A-Level) examination is an annual national examination that is taken by school and private candidates, in Singapore.

More information about the GCE A-Level examination is available below.

The Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education Advanced Level (GCE A-Level) examination was introduced in 1975, and it was delinked from the United Kingdom’s GCE A-Level examination in 2002, as part of the Ministry of Education (MOE) Singapore’s efforts to gain greater control of the management of the examination. The GCE A-Level examination is closely aligned to the Singapore school curriculum that is designed by the MOE.

The GCE A-Level examination is offered annually to:

  • Students from junior colleges or centralised institutes who are taking A-Level courses.
  • Private candidates who have met the eligibility criteria to register for the GCE A-Level examination.

The Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board, MOE, and Cambridge Assessment International Education are the joint examining authorities for the GCE A-Level examination.

Candidates can opt to be examined on subjects at three levels of study – Higher 1 (H1), Higher 2 (H2), and, for school candidates, Higher 3.
