Vodacom South Africa History

It was jointly owned by the South African telecommunications behemoth Telkom and the British international operator Vodafone.

Vodafone announced on 6 November 2008 that it had agreed to boost its investment to 64.5%, while Telkom stated that it would spin off its remaining holding by listing it on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE).

On 1 April 2011, Vodacom launched its rebranding from blue to red, adopting the same color scheme as Vodafone, its parent company.

Mount Kilimanjaro was the highest place in the world covered by GSM until Axiata (via its subsidiary Ncell) provided coverage to the summit of Mount Everest, the highest point in the globe. Vodacom was supported by its upbeat ads during the early phases of South Africa’s transition to democracy, such as the yebo gogo campaign, which is still active in Africa today. Vodacom is the leading cellular network in South Africa, with a market share of over 40 percent and over 45 million subscribers. The corporation is expected to have a 58% market share and more than 103 million customers in Africa.

Vodacom South Africa Technology

In South Africa, Vodacom South Africa offers 3G, 4G, and UMTS networks, as well as HSPA+ (21.1 Mbit/s), HSUPA (42 Mbit/s, 2100 MHz), Wi-Fi, WiMAX, and LTE services. Vodacom was the first cellular service in South Africa to introduce LTE. On October 21, 2015, Vodacom debuted their fiber solution for residential customers. In a speed test conducted on 7 April 2017, Vodacom’s 4G+ network in Brooklyn Mall, Pretoria achieved 240 Mbit/s. Early in 2020, Vodacom became the second network provider in Africa to debut a live 5G network, which was initially accessible in Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Cape Town.
