What Is The TVET College Pass Mark? | While universities remain a popular option for many people wanting to further their education, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges are a great option for gaining skills.

The courses offered at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges are vocational or occupational by nature. They equip students with skills and knowledge with a view of employment for a specific range of jobs.

TVET colleges offer a wide range of courses spanning different industries and disciplines. These include courses in agriculture, engineering, primary health, information technology, hospitality and many more.

They offer the National Certificate (Vocational) and National Accredited Technical Education Diploma (NATED) programmes, also referred to as “Report 191” programmes.

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) says students must achieve 40% in the combination of the term mark and the examination mark in a ratio of 40:60 to pass an instruction offering.

Students need to obtain at least 30% to qualify for a supplementary examination in Report 191 programmes. If the student obtains less than 30%, they will need to re-enrol in the programme.

The DHET added that special requirements may be in place for some courses and practical examinations. This is because specific requirements for determining competency are set by the industry which the student wants to enter.

While TVET colleges allow students who have a minimum of a Grade 9 requirement to enroll in some courses, more focused courses require students to have a matric qualification.

Students can also enrol to complete their Grade 12 or “Matric” qualification at a TVET college.

Once students obtain a Grade 12 qualification, they can choose to further their education journey by obtaining a higher level TVET college qualification or choose to go to university. This is dependent on the results they received.

The name ‘TVET’ indicates that an institution is state-owned. Therefore, students who are interested in obtaining a qualification from a TVET college may also qualify for a National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) bursary.
