  • The applicant must be a child’s primary caretaker or in relation with the child as a parent, grandparent, or guardian or the child must be of sixteen years or over heading a separate family.
  • You must be a citizen of South African society or a permanent resident of the state
  • As a caretaker, you are not allowed to get a grant for more than 6 children (This is not valid for biological or legally adopted children)
  • If you are single, as a parent or guardian of the child, your earning should be less than R52 800 per year but if you are married, then the earning (combined earning of applicant and spouse) should not exceed R105 600 per year.

Eligibility Criteria for the Child:

The Child should meet the following requirements to qualify for the grant:

  •  The child should be 17 years old or less.
  • The child should live together with his guardian or caretaker and they do not get any care or support from the state.
  • Both guardian and child must live in South Africa in order to gain income.

 

Note: If you are just a caretaker of the child then a written note of permission is required from the parent or guardian that you want to take care of the child.

How to apply and what documents are needed to apply for the Sassa child grant

You only need to fill the form as an applicant in the presence of a Sassa officer at your nearest SASSA Office or counter service point of a Regional Office. The only applicant or Sassa officer has the right to fulfill the application form. What do you need to apply for the Sassa child grant, if you don’t have the child’s birth certificate or identity document? You will need to produce an affidavit in the format of Sassa standard. SASSA officer will help you in the completion of forms. The affidavit is completed in the presence of the Commissioner of Oaths who is not the Sassa officer. You need a sworn statement from a reputable person. The reputable person may be a councilor, traditional leader, social worker, minister of religion, etc. but that person must know the child and the applicant. If you want that your application not rejected then you will have to apply for ID at the Home Affairs department. If you are eligible then a temporary ID will be issued by the department. There is also a need for a school report and health card if available.

Grant Review and Suspension Reasons:

Sassa will review the grant and ensure that the grant will receive by the right people. If your grant application is going to be reviewed, the Sassa will inform you three months before. SASSA will review your grant regularly only to check your or your child’s circumstances.

It is important that you should cooperate with the Sassa if your grant is going to be reviewed otherwise there are chances of grant suspension. The grant also is suspended in case of fraud, fraudulent activities, or providing fraudulent information.

This also applied if you fail to cooperate when the child’s grant is reviewed and if you are unable to represent your child or your child is no longer in your care or custody. The grant is also affected if the change occurs either in your medical or financial circumstances or in case of some mistake/error while applying for a grant.

 Reason for Grant Lapsing

The child support grant will be stopped because of the following reasons:

  • If child died
  • if the child turns 18 years of his age, then grant stop in the last month before he turns 18.
  • If the child is not present in the country
  • If a child cares from any state institute
  • If the caretaker does not take their grant for 3 consecutive month

 What if the grant is not approved?

If the grant is rejected, Sassa also reserved the right for the applicant to reconsider the application of your grant eligibility. And after rejection, you can appeal the decision to the Minister of Social Development. You can appeal at the National Office of the Department of Social Development within 90 days of being notified about the rejection.

If the parents want to cancel their child’s grant, they have to visit the nearest Sassa branch office and submit the following documents.
