Nsfas Millionaire Elected In University Role

An infamous student accused of misappropriating R800,000 has been elected treasurer of a popular university’s convocation committee. In the wake of a student being convicted of fraud and sentenced to five years in prison, Walter Sisulu University (WSU) convocation committee treasurer Sibongile Mani was elected. Besides raising funds, the WSU Convocation assists the institution and the WSU Foundation.

During last week’s election, Mani received 79 votes, while her opponent received 29.Athenkosi Fani, Mani’s campaign manager, says her election as treasure proves that she can do the job.

As a steadfast advocate for change, Mani has shown incredible strength and resilience throughout this whole process.After it was discovered that she had received R14 million instead of R1,400, she gained national attention. This money was provided by a service provider contracted with NSFAS to distribute allowances to NSFAS-funded students. Around R800,000 was spent before the error was discovered.

The East London Regional Court found Mani guilty of theft in February 2022. NSFAs distanced themselves from Mani’s prosecution at the time.According to Nsfas, no legal action was taken against the former bursary holder since there was no basis for doing so. A student court case was taken by Intellimali, the service provider.WSU hired Intellimali to distribute NSFAS allowances.
