More About SASSA

In order to operate South Africa’s social security system, including through dispersing social grants, on behalf of the Department of Social Development, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), a national agency of the South African government, was established in April 2005. (DSD). DSD and the Ministry of Social Development are in charge of oversight but not operational control. According to Schedule 3A of the Public Financial Management Act, SASSA is a public entity and was established under the Social Assistance Act of 2004 and the South African Social Security Agency Act of 2004. As of 2022, Busisiwe Memela-Khambula served as the company’s CEO.

In order to decrease corruption and enhance service delivery, SASSA was established in 2005 to centralize the provision of social security aid, which had previously been predominantly a provincial role.

It was closely modeled after Centrelink, its equivalent in Australia.

Its primary duties center on the administration and disbursement of social subsidies, which provide assistance to a sizable section of the South African population (46% in 2022).

The duties of SASSA include processing social security assistance applications, checking and approving applications, paying grants to qualified recipients, and preventing and identifying fraud.
